Badge of Life Conferences  2017-  February 7, Richmond Hill, ON ,February 23 & 24,  Surrey, BC

UPCOMING

May 12-14,  Jasper, AB Agenda & Tickets

June 8,  London, ON – Victory Legion #317 311 Oakland Ave., Agenda & Tickets

Fall  Cornwall, ON

We put first responders with OSI’s at the centre of all that we do.  BOLC is highly collaborative in its approach to solving problems and works hard to get first responders to our conferences by removing their personal stumbling blocks.  We invite individuals, fire, paramedics, police, go transit, border crossing, corrections, academics, veterans, chaplains and first responder agency departments, to join the mental health conversation at our conferences.

We come together in cross-functional teams with other organizations to work on solutions towards mental health treatment and support for first responders.  As part of our day-to-day activity, volunteers with BOLC use innovation tools/ methods, and participate in creative collaborations like idea jams for conferences to stimulate mental health awareness and affect positive healing connections for first responders.

We are constantly evolving our connections through conferences allowing for networking and awareness of new approaches in treating ptsd and decreasing suicide. People are becoming both aware of and practicing self care tools through our innovate website and conferences towards a goal of mental health.  We go as far as surveying our participants , to create “the new” (on our website and with connections/networking during conferences) with them at our side.

Mindfulness meditation Facilitation Training (MMFT)
A 60 Hour Intensive with Michael Stone, MA
Location: Koffler House/Multi-Faith Centre

Have you studied mindfulness or meditation and want to go deeper?  Are you a psychologist, nurse, or educator, or are you in the caring professions and want to facilitate meditation within your vocation?

After having taught mindfulness to over a thousand clinicians through Leading Edge Seminars, Michael Stone has developed this streamlined 60-hour training to help you deliver mindfulness practices to different clinical populations in small groups or one-on-one.

This “how-to” training will offer a language for teaching meditation that is secular and rooted in evidence-based research.  It integrates the traditional maps of meditation in the Buddhist and yoga traditions with the insights of Western psychology and neuroscience.  Attention will be given to the needs of specific clinical populations, diagnostic categories, and contraindications.  You will also receive lots of role-play opportunities, practice teaching, one-on-one feedback, and small group interaction.

The aim is to prepare participants to teach meditation by combining deep personal understanding, a contemporary language for describing what happens in meditation, and the essential skills for facilitation.

Combining in-person training sessions with online peer-based learning, this 60-hour training with Michael Stone and guest faculty is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of meditation practice and learn how to deliver mindfulness meditation with skill.

This training comprises:

      • Two 5-day non-residential courses in Toronto
      • Peer-based learning: you will be partnered with other students in the course for feedback and co-study, creating a community learning environment
      • Online group video meetings
      • Continued support after graduating

Can Praxis

While the Canadian Forces uses team building, communications training and leadership development to prepare soldiers for war, Can Praxis uses horses to help soldiers and first responders recover from it and regain their family relationships.

CP group9

Can Praxis is a collaboration between Steve Critchley and Jim Marland. Critchley is a 28 year veteran of the Canadian Forces and an international mediator, facilitator, negotiator, and trainer. Marland is a registered psychologist, Equine Assisted Learning Facilitator, mountaineer, sailor, corporate trainer and a professional speaker. View this clip: http://youtu.be/i_iwRe8zoNE

As unresolved conflict destroys relationships, and is especially common in overly stressed families, Can Praxis trains participants to manage their conflict effectively. The theoretical foundation for this is Managing Differences by Dan Dana PhD. Richard F. Celeste, former Governor of Ohio, described the book as “A practical guide for dealing with conflict. Dr. Dana moves from scholarly content to common sense with uncommon ease.”

Can Praxis uses walk-along exercises with horses as a training aid. As a ‘flight’ animal they react to human body language. Horses react to what they see; it is their body language that speaks volumes about humans in their proximity. As EAL facilitators, we offer a translation the horses’ behavior to participants in order to increase their own self-awareness.

Calming the Storm: Practical Skills in Verbal

De-escalation

With Dr. Mike Condra, Ph.D, C. Psych

Sometimes our work involves interacting with people who are disgruntled or angry. These interactions at times “fully exercise” our professional skills, and can leave us drained, “edgy” and anxious.  Cumulatively, interactions like these can lead to feelings of fatigue and cynicism.

In this session, you will learn about the principles and the practical steps involved in de-escalation. Beginning with the three guiding principles which underlie the process, Dr. Condra will discuss practical steps to effective de-escalation: controlling the environment, managing the emotional state and engaging cognitive processing.

Building Resilient Teams: Organizational Health in Trauma-Exposed Environments

Lead by: Dr. Patricia Fisher, R.Psych., L.Psych.

9:00AM-4:00PM

Serving: Two Coffee Breaks with Refreshments and Lunch

1-day training program for Supervisors and Managers:

Trauma-exposed work creates a unique climate with increased risk for serious stress and burnout and can lead to a rise in sick time, low morale, lack of team cohesion and high turnover. These consequences can, in turn, seriously limit a team’s ability to work effectively and efficiently.

As leaders, the managers and supervisors of these teams can play an essential role in mitigating the effects of stress and increase the resilience of their staff. This program supports managers and supervisors to be effective leaders and to build strong, resilient and productive teams by:

  • Introducing and apply the Organizational Health Model
  • Explore the vital role of supervisors and managers in Organizational Health
  • Discuss the risk and resiliency factors driving your Organizational Health profile
  • Understanding the unique properties of trauma-exposed work and the critical need to enhance individual and team resiliency
  • Applying the Complex Stress Model of Workplace Stress which includes both the system-based stresses and traumatic stresses (direct trauma and vicarious trauma).
  • Recognizing the impact of chronic stress on individuals, teams and organizations.
  • Defining the ecology of your workplace and prioritizing your current needs
  • Identifying the three key functions of a supervision and mentoring program
  • Reviewing our unique toolkit for leaders in trauma-exposed work

Each participant will receive:

  • A copy of the workshop resource booklet containing the overheads and a comprehensive suite of reusable assessment tools
  • A copy of: Building Resilient Teams: Facilitating Workplace Wellness & Organizational Health in Trauma-Exposed Environment

Break the Cycle of Inherited Family Trauma — A Workshop with Mark Wolynn

October 21-22
Calgary, AB

In this workshop, we’ll explore the unexplained fears, anxieties, depression, obsessive thoughts and chronic conditions that we’ve biologically inherited from our parents and grandparents—symptoms we often think are ours. Through lectures, interactive group work and family constellations, Mark Wolynn, author of IT DIDN’T START WITH YOU: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle (Viking, 2016) will offer effective ways to break biologically inherited patterns so we can live healthier, happier, more fulfilled lives. You will learn how to:

  • Become a detective of your family history, uncovering the traumatic events that can affect health, success, vitality and relationships.
  • Interpret the clues in your words, feelings, symptoms and behaviors that link to unresolved traumas.
  • Use dialogue, imagery, ritual, healing sentences, and other neuroscience tools for resolution, so that you, your children, and their children, can be free from having to relive the pain of previous generations.

“COPE” or “Couples Overcoming PTSD Everyday” is a new and innovative program that uses the power of the “group” to learn how to manage PTSD in the home. Treating the individual diagnosed with PTSD in isolation misses a major component on the path to better health and happier life.

COPE is sponsored by Wounded Warriors Canada, our founding National Funding Partner. From the initial presentation of the idea of COPE, they have offered their encouragement, support and generous funding of this initiative.

COPE is now open to first responders.  We do have a fairly long waiting list so please be patient as we work our way through the list of couples asking for COPE. When your name comes up for a possible position for a COPE Program in your geographical area, someone will contact you either by phone or email to see if the dates work for you. If so, you and your partner will be required to attend by phone an intake interview conducted by a COPE Psychologist. This process takes one hour and is the final step in being accepted to attend the COPE Program. Once this is completed and you are both deemed ready/fit to attend COPE, you will receive the Joining Instructions.  In the meantime, and while you wait, you might consider sourcing the CanPraxis Program for couples also funded by Wounded Warriors Canada.
