First Tears Fall

A mall of summer shoppers rush.
Their Friday evening meals consume.
A queue of movie fans chattering incessantly.
An infant cries…
Another infant pale and still,
on cold and shinny stainless steel,
lies among flashes of thunder.
No tears fall.
His naked body a record makes,
in the thunderous silence,
in the empty room of sterile white and light.
He cries not,
whimpers not,
he hungers not for his mother’s breast.
He is still.
No tears fall.
He is slowly wrapped in soft blue cotton.
His hands and legs are slowly covered.
His face is seen no more.
Manly arms from years of work,
gently carries a warm blue bundle.
He protects his fellows from the pain.
Their infants home in bed.
No tears fall.
His walk was fifty paces,
should have been millions.
A door opens.
The rank odour of cold condensation wafts.
Compressors pumping frosty air.
A stainless trolley sits waiting.
A tiny warm bundle lied there to wait.
No tears fall.
Thunder and flashes seal the portal.
The locking clang makes it final.
A huge rock grows in this manly throat,
and sadness fell,
and eyes welled up,
but no tears fell.
Darkness falls,
his greying hair and eyes so sad,
he hangs his armour of blue and his Badge.
But no tears fall.
…an infant cries searching his mother’s life giving breast.
And a first tear falls.
