Lumby, BC – Dr. Sandra de Blois
Registered Professional Counsellor, Certified Trauma Therapist
Dr. de Blois uses Mindfulness-Based Equine Assisted Therapy (MBEAT®) to treat complex trauma, PTSD, depression and anxiety. MBEAT® combines mindfulness-based interventions and equine assisted therapy. I work with military veterans, emergency first responders, and aboriginal people. Mindfulness is well documented in the literature to mitigate the negative effects that chronic traumatic stress produces in the brain. I use horses in the therapeutic process to improve communication skills and anger management. Equine assisted therapy also encourages clients to connect with grief and it helps remedy symptoms of emotional numbness. Furthermore, equine assisted therapy promotes self-empowerment, self-compassion, and it assists clients in gaining new insights about themselves and their traumatic experiences. Equine assisted therapy is inherently present moment focused and thus marries well with mindfulness based therapy. Besides my formal academic training, my knowledge of PTSD and depression comes from a deep, personal experience. The therapy takes place on a tranquil ranch setting which helps traumatized individuals to reconnect with the natural world. I see clients on a weekly basis and I also offer intensive 4 to 8 week programs (6 hours of therapy per day, Mon-Fri). In addition, those clients willing to engage in an intensive program receive exposure therapy as used in the Instinctual Trauma Response model developed by Dr’s. Louis Tinnin and Linda Grant at Intensive Trauma Therapy Inc, W. Virginia. I am one of very few trauma therapists in Canada who has been trained in this model of trauma treatment.
