Adjunctive Treatment Trauma Yoga: Nicole Brown Faulknor (TCTSY-F), Kitchener-Waterloo & Cambridge, ON
Nicole is a Yoga Instructor, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and Child and Youth Counsellor as well as a member of both the Colleges of Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario (CRPO) and the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT) with over 18 years of professional experience working with marginalized, vulnerable and oppressed communities, individuals, families and children. She has worked extensively with individuals and communities suffering from mental health, addictions, systemic poverty and profiling in order to therapeutically improve relationships with government programs and services.
She has initiated a project proposal in Ontario that works in collaboration with evidence based adjunctive treatment and methodology of TCTSY (Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga) as the theoretical foundations to the psychology and neurophysiology of trauma and disrupted attachment; The Poverty Reduction Strategy; Early Learning Strategy; Patient First Action Plan for Healthcare and the Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy. Her project is in support of an approach to transform the mental health system in Ontario through a forward thinking vision and embodiment mindset working with trauma, mental health and addictions to support clear long-term strategies for change in perhaps a very different, maybe more non-traditional approach in efforts to create a space for people to work with trauma, anxiety, depression, stigmatization of both marginalized and non-marginalized communities. Healing Heroes is a science-based trauma sensitive yoga program designed specifically for First Responders.
Trauma is defined as an illness of not being alive in the present. When people revisit their trauma, they go with their entire physical body. The physical sensations can range from uncomfortable to re-traumatizing. Thoughts of “I am wrong” or “something is wrong with me” can result in experiencing feelings of shame or failure.
The amygdala, the “smoke detector” of the brain, allows you to focus and then respond: relax or activate. For those living with PTSD, the amygdala is no longer filtering properly. This can result in needing to work harder at “normal” day to day activities. Individuals diagnosed with PTSD can experience headaches, chronic pain, numbing, anger and violence.
Research has proven the body’s ability to re-grow the amygdala through meditation, pranayama (focused breathing) and asana (physical postures). Meditation allows us to pause and get fully present. Focused breathing reduces heart rate; allowing us to observe without getting hijacked by our emotions and feelings.
Our program is built on the work of Dr. van der Kolk, past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School, and Medical Director of the Trauma Center at JRI in Brookline, Massachusetts. Through his book “The Body Keeps the Score” (2014) Dr. van der Kolk outlined how traumatic stress literally rearranges the brain’s wiring – especially areas related to pleasure, engagement, control and trust. He demonstrates how these areas can be reactivated through innovative practices such as meditation, breathing and yoga; a proven alternative to drugs and talk therapy.
By incorporating the research of Dr. van der Kolk and his team, the goal of Healing Heroes is to help people find ways to alter the inner landscape of their bodies and minds, and experience a place of self-compassion, without judgement.
